5 Tips for Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is a fabulous program containing tools for manipulating and enhancing pictures and graphics. Although the application is useful it can be complicated for some. Here are some tips you may find helpful even if you are a veteran Photoshop user.
Picture "pops out" of the frame
This is an easy task that can have dramatic effects. A portion of the picture will "pop out" of the original frame and look as though it has "popped" onto your screen.
- Save a copy of the original picture and work on a second copy, just in case you make mistakes.
- Use any selection tool to cut out only the portion of the image you wish to have "pop out".
- Lift the image by using the Float Command and duplicate it onto its own layer.
- Create a new layer in the frame for the photo. You can use textures, borders or nothing at all.
- Select the image you want and place it in a new layer with a solid background.
- Set the word you want using the type input method of choice. Use a style with a large area so much of your picture can be seen.
- Select the type so you can move it around.
- Click on the picture layer to edit the picture.
- Use the Float Command to pick up the picture inside your text.
- The selection will start a new layer and fill with a copy of the picture.
- Turn off the original layer with the picture and your text will be filled with the picture.
- Start a new layer and create an object of the same shape as your picture. The shape must replicate that of your picture and will be used like a cookie-cutter to place over the picture.
- Make sure your shape layer is under the original picture layer in the Layer Palette.
- Place the pointer over the line that divides these two layers in the Layer Palette while holding down the Alt/Option Key and click.
- You have created a layer group. Choose Save As and select Photoshop EPS as the file format. Name the file. You are done.
- Use Photo Filter from the Adjustment Layers area to choose color filters based on what your photo looks like.
- Choose Color Balance from the Adjustment Layers area to adjust flesh and other tone levels for different elements in the photo.
- Use Levels to balance the photo after the above changes are made.
- Select an area with the Magic Wand to adjust from the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. You can repeat these steps as many times and in as many areas as necessary.
- Adjust the Brightness/Contrast levels as your final adjustments to the photo.
- Create a new layer.
- Select the Dodge tool.
- Set the Range to Midtones on the Tool Options bar. The default Exposure is set at 50%. You may change this, but 50% is a good place to start.
- Run the Dodge tool over the teeth and eyes to whiten. If you make a mistake or the results are too white, you can use Undo to reduce the Exposure level.
- Zoom out frequently because the results often look different when viewing the entire image.

10 Things You Could be Using Photoshop for But Probably Aren't
Most people don't use Photoshop to its fullest capabilities. Here are just ten uses to which you could put this highly versatile software.
1. Restoring Old Photographs. Have a look through that old family photo album - the really old one from up in Grandma's attic. Inside there are probably a few photos from way back when that haven't stood the test of time so well. They've got cracks and tears that really spoil their appearance. Scan them into Photoshop, and then set to work with the Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, and Patch tools. The Healing Brush in particular is a great tool for this purpose as it samples data from one part of the picture and blends it in with what's already there.
2. Correcting Mistakes. We've all done it: Had an attack of "finger over the lens syndrome," or got too close with the flash, so our subjects suffer from "red eye" and look like extras from a horror movie. Use the crop tool to salvage something usable from your obscured photo, and the enlarge wizard to blow it up to a reasonable size. For "red eye" and "pet eye," use the eyedropper tool to sample color from around the iris, and a brush to paint away the red.
3. Adding Graphics to Videos. It's a little known fact, but many domestic and professional nonlinear editing systems (especially the Mac based ones like Avid or Final Cut) enable you to import Photoshop .psd files directly into the timeline.
4. Creating Text Effects for Print and Web. There's an almost unlimited amount of things you can do with text in Photoshop. Use the Type Mask Tools to create picture filled text, then upload the results to your web page - or print them out for a one of a kind T-shirt.
5. Turning a Photo Into a Work of Art. Everyone likes to have nice things to look at. Most of us like to have pictures on the wall, and something that looks different from what other people have on their walls is a definite plus. Unless you're blessed with artistic talent, though, this can be very expensive - until now. Use one of Photoshop's many Artistic or Brush Stroke filters to turn your photos into "new masters," then print them out on quality art paper.
6. Designing Web Banners and Buttons. Photoshop comes with a predefined web banner sized canvas. Photoshop's sister application, Image Ready, comes with several - and lots of tools for animating text and pictures. You can also create interactive buttons that enhance a web browsing experience.
7. Adding Text to Photographs. Impress your boss by putting the company name on the side of an airliner, building, or racing car. Use the Move Tool to skew the text to fit the contours of the picture, adjust the opacity a little, and hey presto! The text will look like it's always been part of the photo.
8. Combining Pictures, Text, and Graphics to Make Covers for Books, Reports and CDs. Photoshop contains many of the image manipulation capabilities of high-end DTP applications that cost thousands. Use the "Layer via Cut" command to make your title text go behind part of the picture - just like on the cover of "Rolling Stone."
9. Designing Web Pages. Did you know that Photoshop and Image Ready can turn your photograph or artwork into a web page? Use the slice tool to cut your work into easily downloadable pieces, then the rollover function to embed website URLs.
10. Combining Pictures to Make the Impossible Possible. Come on! You didn't seriously think that Michael Moore and President George W. Bush really stood hand in hand on the White House lawn for the Fahrenheit 9/11 poster, did you? I don't know for certain that they used Photoshop to fake that picture, but they certainly could have done. With Photoshop you can remove the background from one picture, take some elements from another, and combine them with the background from a third to create a picture that could never have been taken for real. Who says the camera can't lie!

Three Ways to Use the Crop Tool in Photoshop

Open an image suitable for cropping. Select the Crop Tool on the main toolbox. In the top options bar is a small window called Resolution and with this we can set the resolution the image will be after cropping. So enter a value of 100, the resolution of the image will change to 100 pixels per inch. If a value has been put in, press Enter.If the Resolution box is empty then the resolution will remain the same as it is already.
Starting in the top left corner of the image, drag the crop symbol across the whole picture.
- The small squares, or handles, of the crop frame are used to adjust its size.
- The centre handles will move a whole side in.
- Moving a corner handle in will move two sides in together.
- Holding Shift while moving in a corner will keep the image proportions the same.
- Holding Alt while moving in a centre handle will move its opposite side in the same amount.
- The crop area can be rotated. After positioning the crop frame where desired, position the cursor near a corner. It changes to a double arrow and the frame can be rotated.
- The darkened area represents the part of the image which will be removed.
- Press Enter or Return to make the crop.
- Cancel the crop with Ctrl + full stop (period) / Cmd + full stop (period).
- There are also Cancel and Commit buttons in the top options bar.

The Crop Tool can be selected with C.Width and Height can be set in advance in the options bar. This is useful for cropping a number of images consistently.
For example, there might be a number of images of various shapes and sizes. A large part of the images or just small sections of them might be required as illustrations in a layout or on the net.- Enter the sizes required into the Width and Height boxes.
Be sure to include px for pixels or in or cm. - Enter a Resolution value.
- Drag the Crop tool across the image to include the area required. Press Enter.
Whatever the size of the original image, the cropped image will be of the dimensions entered into the options bar.
When cropping, if no specific dimensions are required, leave these boxes empty.
All option bar boxes can be cleared quickly with the Clear button.
Check the resolution in its info box in the lower left corner. If the scan was at 2700ppi or some other odd number, it is often more convenient to use the industry reproduction standard of 300ppi. Putting 300ppi in the Resolution box will cause the dimensions to resize in proportion.
If the image is flattened, the options of Delete and Hide are greyed out.
If the image is a layer, then Delete will remove all of the image outside the cropping lines. Hide will merely hide and not delete the cropped areas. Press Return or Enter.If Hide was checked, the hidden areas can be seen by moving the image with the Move tool. These parts of the image can be retrieved by increasing the Canvas Size.

Perspective can be adjusted with the Crop tool; useful when the subject is a building which needs to be straightened.- Hold the Alt key and double-click on the Background in the Layers panel to convert it to a normal layer.
- Select the Crop Tool and drag it across the image.
- In the top options bar there is a box to check for Perspective.
If Hide is selected, then the Perspective box will be greyed out.
The Delete option needs to be selected.
Once Perspective is checked, the Hide and Delete are greyed out. - With the use of the corner handles, adjust the cropping box to make the sides parallel with the building.
By moving the corner handles, the building can be skewed all over the place and the method gives great control over the final shape of the building.

The Crop tool can be used to increase the overall size of an image.Open an image
- With the Move tool, drag the bottom right corner of the frame down and to the right so that there is more grey area around the image.
- Press D to set the default toolbox colours of black over white.
- Choose the Crop Tool from the toolbox and drag it over the image.
- Hold Alt + Shift and drag the bottom right corner anchor point of the crop frame down and to the right. Press Enter.
- An extra white border is put around the image. If the image is not flattened, then the extra area will be transparent.
- This is useful if you want to put a different border around an image without eating into the subject matter too much.
- A unique border can be added as a separate layer and dragged across while holding Shift to centre it. Changing the Blending Mode of the border can merge it into the image better.

Observe the image thoroughly. Find out the ways to make it more expressive for a better story. Find out the key parts to put expression. Think about a human face. Where the key parts are? Eyes, lips and hair, bodyline. And What their expressions are? Look, smile, hair-dressing, gesture. Work on those and try to make photos good to better and better to best.
Coax up the appeal. It is a good technique to make the image stand out. Remember, the appeal should conform to the theme or it will distract the viewer. If there are approaching eyes or hands of model with a product, make sure that they are directed toward the viewer with detail, vivid look.
Retouch the dullness, wrinkles & spots: By thorough observation try to find out the dullness and spots. The better help you will get by enlarging the image. Then you can examine part by part, meticulously. Remove the spots; repair the wrinkles; but be careful with the dullness. Retouching of dullness is very intricate and involves experienced eye and arty mind. Don’t blunder here with much color and brightness. Never sponge or dodge it unnecessarily. Experienced says, - little retouch does good. So, be restrained and do better. You can streamline an image with well-designed Photoshop retouching tools. Combined and artful use of color, contrast and brightness can enhance an image amazingly.

Templates With a Good Design
Making your website's template is how you are going to make people see that your website is something that they should check out. A template is what the web page you are designing is going to look like. You can create a cute website by making your own template. It lets you decide on which colors to use and which images to put onto your web page.
When creating a graphic design you will be using Photoshop to make your own image. You will want to use an image that has a transparent background this will allow you to use a filler of any color for the background of the page. When you want to add content or different tabs on your webpage just make a rectangular or rounded box area and then add the text you need inside of it. You can then later add effects to the box you created to make it blend in well with your webpage. Then you save this file as a .jpg image in a web template folder.
When you are creating a HTML template it is done the same way, with a few differences. One difference is that for this you would not use Photoshop you are going to use Dreamweaver. You will first create a layer and then insert the image that you created. You next use the page properties tab to match the page's background to the background of the image. You will once again use boxes to make the text you want on the website visible. Lastly you save this as a web template folder called template.html.
When you want to design a template you need to envision the design of the template you want to create, so when you later start to put it together you have an idea of what you would like. Envisioning it first will make it easier to create the template. You do not have to figure out the fine details of the template, just the basics. Like where you are going to put your navigation boxes and the colors you would like to use, then later you can decide on the rest.
